10000 times FASTER than the Internet
Wow! Imagine this super fast laser beam travel. Now, imagine that your internet connection will be this fast!
The grid is simply a new technology for internet. It will be the fastest, speeding up to 10000 times than the internet.
The grid is currently not yet available for the commercial sectors. But eventually it’ll become part of the networks to be used by existing telcos, network service providers and businesses.
It is a high-speed computing network project started 7 years ago as it’s highly needed by the Cern (where Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989) for transmitting huge amount of data generated by the analysis that involves the particle accelerator - Large Hadron Collider (LHC), used for the analysis of those foreign particles from the Universe. The grid will become the super high-speed computer networks used for capturing data from LHC at the Cern, starting this summer when they switch on the LHC to start analyzing those foreign particles.
Why is it better?
Let's admit it, the existing internet network is now too crowded making it to lack capacity for high speed data transmissions. The grid is completely different, which has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, and there is no single outdated component that would cause slow data transmission.
Will there be major changes?
Yes! Once the grid has become available for commercial use, reaching the domestic or business users, desktop computing will become obsolete. As everybody will just rely on online applications, as the Internet speed will be so extremely fast then you can just store all your data and work with the online applications and you will be able to access your applications, data everywhere once you are hooked up to the Internet. Like having a loaded travel bag without carrying it but can access from it anywhere in the world. This will also affect some major desktop applications like Microsoft.
Also with that fast internet connection, more communication medias will improve. Expect virtual and holographic applications on the future. Now, that's what I wanna see! =D
